This vintage airliner has been reborn as the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, where an integrated operating room allows doctors to perform eye surgery and share their expertise with aspiring colleagues in the world’s poorest countries. The enormous plane is 55 meters long with a wingspan of 47 meters. In the last two decades, this airline has conducted over 200 programs in 77 countries. Each medical program requires weeks of coordination that creates a logistical nightmare, but better vision has been brought to nearly 15 million people.
The aircraft is 6,000 kilometres away in Mongolia where hundreds of potential patients are in the national central hospital hoping to be selected for treatment on the Orbis DC-10. Here the Medical Director meets with local doctors and arranges their training during the three week stay.
