How the U.S. Navy Says Its Final Farewell at Sea – Burial at Sea Documentary

In this documentary-style feature, we dive into one of the United States Navy’s most solemn and meticulously upheld traditions: the Burial at Sea Ceremony. Conducted aboard active-duty warships—from destroyers and cruisers to massive aircraft carriers—this ceremony honors sailors, veterans, and service members who choose the ocean as their final resting place.

A burial at sea is never a routine evolution. It follows strict procedure and deep reverence: the preparation of the remains, the dressing of the deceased in Full Dress Blue uniform, the ceremonial folding of the American flag, the ringing of the ship’s bell, and the final, dignified committal into the sea.

In this video, you will discover:

The purpose of Navy burials at sea and when they are performed

The step-by-step sequence of the ceremony aboard an operational warship

The responsibilities of the Chaplain, Honor Guard, Boatswain’s Mate, and Commanding Officer

How the ship prepares for the ritual, including reducing speed and securing the flight deck

Details on burial shrouds, weighted caskets, and modern burial capsules

Why silence, precision, and discipline are essential elements of naval heritage

How the crew pays tribute to their fallen shipmate before the final order to “carry on”

This documentary offers a respectful and educational look at one of the Navy’s oldest and most honored traditions—built on service, remembrance, and the enduring connection between sailors and the sea.
