Union Pacific’s LOW10 and LOW20 Locals in South Los Angeles 11/14/2024

Published at : 17 Dec 2025

Today I chased the two Union Pacific local trains that originate out of Fourth Street Yard, LOW10, and LOW20, also known as the Torrance Local and the El Segundo Local.

I started off waiting for these trains on the Union Pacific Wilmington Subdivision at Vernon Station in South Los Angeles. Before the locals came, the Gardena Rock Train passed, RWCWCG, taking an empty set of hoppers back to Cabazon. Seeing this train and the two locals meant that I caught all three regular trains that use this stretch of trackage along the Wilmington Sub.

The first local to appear was LOW20, the El Segundo Local. I caught it at the same spot I caught the rock train, before chasing it to its first industry of the day, Grain Craft. The train was running about a couple hours late, allowing me to be able to see it in good daylight here. Following its switching session at Graincraft, I moved ahead of it again.

Here it sat waiting for a signal, as LOW10 was routed around it on the siding, allowing for me to catch the two trains side by side, an extremely rare sight on the Wilmington Subdivision, as usually LOW20 is many hours before LOW10. After LOW10 had lapped LOW20, LOW20 then inched forward after dispatch lined them behind it. It passed me for the third and final time near Slauson Junction, where I then switched the chase to the Torrance Local.

From here, I caught the Torrance Local on the Torrance Industrial Lead next, where they were finishing switching their first customer, the Phillips 66 refinery near Gardena. Following that, the next spot was the famous streetrunning spot in Gardena. Continuing, I was able to catch it slow rolling at a few more crossings before it arrived at its second industry of the day, JCI Jones Chemicals. Here, it spent a good amount of time switching tanks carrying various chemicals. Despite one industry left to go, crenshaw lumber, I ended the chase here at the farthest south this train would go, as I switched gears to see the BNSF First Watson Roadswitcher which had just departed at that time, which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/1VlP0VGMf_w
