They Laughed at Hydraulic Excavators — Until Poclain Took Over the World
Published at : 18 Dec 2025
Poclain, founded by Georges Bataille in 1927 in rural France, revolutionized construction equipment by developing the world's first fully hydraulic excavator in 1951 and pioneering radial piston hydraulic motors through Claude Bataille's innovations starting in 1958. The company grew from a small agricultural equipment workshop to a global leader with 10,000 employees by 1970, producing iconic machines like the TY45 three-wheeled excavator and the massive EC1000. However, the 1973 oil crisis and restrictive French government policies forced the Bataille family to sell controlling interest to American company Case in 1977. Despite losing the excavator division, Pierre Bataille successfully bought back and preserved the hydraulics division in 1985, which continues today as an independent, family-owned company producing advanced hydraulic motors for mobile equipment worldwide. Poclain's technological legacy fundamentally transformed the construction and heavy equipment industries, making hydraulic systems the universal standard.
