SO COOL TO SEE! A400M ATLAS REVERSE TAXI ONTO RUNWAY WITH REAR RAMP DOWN & TAKEOFF • RAF CONINGSBY

Published at : 18 Dec 2025

Now it is not often we see an aircraft taxiing in reverse! This Brize Norton based A400M Atlas is cleared to taxi (in reverse) and back track (using the runway to taxi in the opposite direction of the runway in use) to runway 25 at RAF Coningsby.

The Atlas A400M has the ability to carry a 37-tonne payload over 2,000nm to established and remote civilian and military airfields, and short unprepared or semi-prepared strips. Capable of operating at altitudes up to 40,000ft, the A400 also offers impressive low-level capability. So yes, it can carry 37,000kg of Salmon.

It will accommodate as many as 116 fully-equipped troops; vehicles; helicopters, including a Chinook; mixed loads, including nine aircraft pallets and 54 passengers, or combinations of vehicles, pallets and personnel, up to a payload of 37 tonnes.

The A400M is sized between the C-130 and the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. It can carry heavier loads than the C-130 and can use rough landing strips. In addition to its transport capabilities, the A400M can perform aerial refuelling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment. The A400M's maiden flight took place on 11 December 2009 from Seville Airport, Spain.
