Mountain rescuers warned tourists not to get too close to lava erupting from Mount Etna, stating that several people have been injured trying to get a closer look at the volcano.
Authorities say tourists have also gotten hypothermia from dressing inappropriately or getting lost in foggy conditions.
The latest eruption began on Feb. 11, with fiery lava cascading from the newly active “Bocca Nuova” crater. Ash emissions have had impacts on air traffic and nearby communities.
Mount Etna remains one of the world’s most active volcanoes and eruptions are frequent but rarely cause damage.
