The situation in the Phlegraean Fields continues to escalate: new measurement data shows that ground uplift is accelerating much faster than previously assumed. While the area west of Naples has been suffering from bradyseism for years, the Campi Flegrei is now rising by a full 25 millimeters per month – an alarming figure. At the same time, researchers are recording an unusual combination of intense pressure increases and intermittent decreases in seismic activity, which increases the risk of stronger earthquakes. The temperatures of the fumaroles in Solfatara and Pisciarelli also continue to rise, confirming the ongoing warming of the hydrothermal system. A new scientific study also shows why most earthquakes in the region are relatively weak despite the tense situation: most of the energy is “swallowed” by the rock.
