Air layering is a method of plant propagation that involves encouraging roots to form on a branch of a plant while it is still attached to the mother plant. This can be done with any type of plant, including roses.
To air layer a rose, you will need:
A sharp knife or shears
A banana
A plastic polyethene
Instructions:
Choose a healthy branch on your rose plant that is about 1/2 inch thick.
Make a cut in the bark of the branch that is about 1 to 2 inch long.
Cut the banana from the middle and attach it to the cut part of the branch.
Wrap around with polythene.
After about 6-8 weeks, check the branch for roots. If there are roots, you can cut the branch from the mother plant and plant it in a pot or in the ground.
Adding banana to the air layering process is not necessary, but it can help to promote root growth. The banana contains hormones that can stimulate root development.
Here are some tips for successful air layering:
Choose a healthy branch that is not too old or too young.
Make the cut in the bark at a 45-degree angle.
Insert the moss or sphagnum moss into the cut so that it is in contact with the cambium layer.
Wrap the plastic bag or other container tightly around the moss or sphagnum moss and the branch.
Secure the bag or container with a rubber band or string.
Add a small amount of water to the moss or sphagnum moss.
Place the bag or container in a shady spot.
Check the moss or sphagnum moss regularly and add water as needed.
Be patient! It can take 6-8 weeks for roots to form. Thanks
