The Tale of the King’s Son
Jimothy Catheriane
This painting might be a little too revealing, but the core idea stems from the concept of the king’s son. When someone is referred to as the king’s son rather than the prince, it’s usually not a good sign. That was the initial spark behind this piece.
With that theme in mind, I locked in a Renaissance aesthetic—the old-world attire, the big frilly collar. At the same time, I kept finding myself painting a deformed goblin-like figure over and over. This made me think of The Medieval Jester, which is an incredible painting. That, in turn, led me to think of Jim Carrey—for reasons I won’t bother explaining here.
As the Renaissance portrait took shape, I hit a familiar roadblock. Whenever I paint a straightforward portrait, it always feels empty. It needs more. I like to push further, to see what other worlds I can collide together. In this case, I started leaning toward J-Horror aesthetics and graffiti influences.
I’ve always loved the way people deface ads in the streets—scribbling devil horns, mustaches, and crude marks over perfectly polished faces. There’s something raw and rebellious about that kind of graffiti, and it has always inspired me. So, that’s the direction this painting took—a Renaissance portrait twisted by horror and urban vandalism.
Now, I’m mulling over a few possible titles:
