Monoprinting a White Rose #botanicalprint #monoprinting #natureprints #printmaking

Now that most of the flowers have finished their season and the leaves are off the trees, its a tricky time for monoprinting from fresh plants. Thankfully my family and friends offer their depleted flowers to me before throwing them in the recycling, and roses are often amongst them. They are certainly not easy to print….

The White Rose (Rosa Alba), often associated with purity, innocence, and new beginnings. In floriography, it represents loyalty, humility, and the bonds of eternal love, often used in weddings and memorials. Folklore suggests planting white roses near the entrance of a home to bring peace.

In mythology and folklore, the white rose is deeply tied to themes of transformation and devotion. A popular tale recounts that the white rose was born from Aphrodite’s tears, symbolising love and loss. In England, it became the emblem of the House of York during the Wars of the Roses, a turbulent period of civil conflict in the 15th century. The rose’s symbolism of peace and unity endures, and it remains a significant symbol epecially in Yorkshire.

If you have a bouquet gifted to you trying to print with the flowers when they are going over is always worth a try. If you would like to try this process at home, there is a list of materials on the website link in the profile or you can find it on this page about half way down https://www.impressionsofnature.co.uk/materials.
