Life in an Isolated Chinese Mountain Village – A Hidden Paradise of Papermaking Heritage

Published at : 18 Dec 2025

Quanping Village is located in You County, Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, China. The village sits at an altitude of about 500 meters. To reach it, one must drive for about an hour on a mountain road that becomes progressively narrower, creating a sense of a secluded, idyllic paradise. Situated in a semi-mountainous and semi-hilly area, the village is surrounded by towering mountains, boasting superior natural conditions, a tranquil environment, and a simple, honest local culture.

The village enjoys a subtropical monsoon humid climate, with fresh air and pleasant weather. The history of Quanping Village can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. It is also a village that has inherited the ancient papermaking techniques of Cai Lun, and it is home to a county-level intangible cultural heritage project: "ancient papermaking." As a result, large bamboo forests, an indispensable raw material for papermaking, are distributed around the village.

The village is small, and its residents are mainly "left-behind" elderly people who are friendly and sincere. Streams are a common sight within the village. During holidays, tourists often come to play in the water, escape the summer heat, and enjoy the natural coolness and tranquility.
