Trip Description (English):

This time, our journey was around the Kalthota side. In Balangoda, we met Lakpriya, someone who had been inviting us for a long time. We also had our breakfast there, thanks to him.

After breakfast, our first stop was Kuragala. This place was once an ancient Buddhist monastic complex. However, over time, it was taken over by Muslim devotees, and a mosque has even been built at the site. A court ruling has since ordered the removal of unauthorized constructions.

Currently, Kuragala has been restored in a way that Buddhist pilgrims can visit and pay respects. This location holds archaeological significance dating back to the prehistoric period. From here, you can enjoy views of Haputale, the Udawalawe Reservoir, Hambegamuwa Wewa, and the Walawe River Basin.

Afterwards, we went searching for the Duwili Ella waterfall on the Walawe River. We turned off from the main road and drove about 2–3 km downhill. From where we parked the vehicles, it's about another 1 km walk to reach the waterfall up close.

Then we returned to Lakpriya ayya’s place in Kalthota, where we stayed overnight. It's a beautiful place with basic facilities and three rooms. If you’re visiting this area, this is a great spot to stop and stay. Lunch was already prepared for us there, and after having lunch, we left in the evening towards Kandiyapitiya and Mahapalassa, hoping to spot some elephants that are said to appear in the evenings.

One of the most beautiful places we saw during the evening journey was Kandiyapitiya Wewa. The lake is breathtakingly beautiful in the evening, surrounded by sugarcane fields. Even though we went to a few lakes, we couldn’t spot any elephants. However, we were lucky to meet a local who shared past elephant sightings and stories. We had a cup of tea at his hut and stayed there until dark, then returned to our lodging.

On the second day, we headed to Handagiriya Park (Handagiriya Entrance – Udawalawe National Park). On the way, we came across Diyavini Ella near Diyavinna. You can spot this waterfall from the Udawalawe reservoir dam area.

After seeing Diyavini Ella, we reached Handagiriya Park around 10 AM. In this park, you can travel about 18 km towards the reservoir. However, due to the water level being quite high these days, the Wewa Thawula (reservoir edge) is submerged, and we couldn’t reach it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see any elephants either.

We even had to clear a fallen tree from the path on our way back, and by the time we exited the park, it was already getting dark.

I’ll leave Lakpriya ayya’s number here: 0773441044. Feel free to contact him
