Inside North America’s Oldest and Largest Family Sawmill – A Legendary Lumber Legacy

Published at : 18 Dec 2025

step inside Freeman Lumber – North America’s Oldest and Largest Family Sawmill, a story that began nearly 200 years ago. 🌲⚙️

In 1830, Gorham Freeman settled in Greenfield, Nova Scotia, and built a small sawmill to supply lumber for his neighbors’ homes and barns. From those humble beginnings, Freeman Lumber grew into a giant lumber legacy, processing hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of spruce, pine, and fir every year.

Through the generations, the Freeman family sawmill has stood strong through history:

⚔️ World Wars – supplying lumber for barracks, ships, and military projects

📉 The Great Depression – keeping saws running and workers paid when others shut down

⚙️ Industrialization – investing in steam, diesel, electricity, and now laser scanning & AI

Today, Freeman Lumber is still family-owned and operated, passing knowledge from father to son, generation to generation. Their products travel far beyond Nova Scotia, reaching homes and builders across the Eastern United States — from Maine to Florida.

But Freeman Lumber is more than production numbers. 🌲 They’ve built a reputation of sustainable forestry, working with forestry associations to ensure every tree cut today is replaced with new growth for tomorrow. This isn’t just business — it’s a cultural commitment to respect the forest, carried on for nearly two centuries.
