By 1950 there were 6 million black and white TVs in the USA. With only analog electronics, engineers had to find a way to add color to television while still having the system remain compatible with all the existing black and white TVs, and vice versa: a color TV had to be able to receive TV from black and white TV stations. We look at some of the tricks that were used to achieve this, and the clever way we slowed electricity - effectively slowing the speed of light - to do this. This covers the basic ideas behind NTSC and PAL (an enhancement to NTSC) , and to a lesser extent, SECAM.
