Day 8 - Gemsbok bulls battle for dominance

Published at : 17 Dec 2025

Just before the winter season, I visited the Kgalagadi National Park in South Africa. Just five kilometers outside Twee Rivieren Rest Camp at the first waterhole called Samevloeiing because of the Nossob and Auob Rivers meeting at this point, I saw how these two Gemsbok bulls compete to control a group of females. The two bulls usually start the fight by staring each other down and gauging their strengths and weaknesses. There will be actual fighting if neither bull backs down as was what happend here. The bulls charge at one another and knock each other's heads with their horns. In the end, the one bull backed off, and it seemed as if the other quickly realised it and saw it was no more competition, turned around and returned to the herd.
