Chaos In Canada Today! Extreme Blizzard Causing Many Collision In Hwy 401 Ontario
Ontario is currently grappling with one of the most significant winter weather events of the decade. A powerful low-pressure system, fueled by a relentless Arctic vortex, has blanketed the province in a thick layer of snow, bringing daily life to a standstill from the shores of Lake Huron to the nation’s capital in Ottawa. In the Greater Toronto Area, commuters woke up to a transformed landscape. While the city center saw approximately 25 centimeters of accumulation, the "Snow Belt" regions, including Barrie, Orillia, and Muskoka, reported staggering figures exceeding 60 centimeters within a 24-hour window. The Ontario Provincial Police reported over 400 collisions within a 12-hour period on Tuesday. Major arteries, including sections of Highway 401 and the Queen Elizabeth Way, were forced to close intermittently due to "whiteout conditions" and jackknifed tractor-trailers. "Visibility was zero. It was like driving inside a glass of milk," said one motorist stranded near Milton. At Toronto Pearson International Airport, more than 60% of scheduled flights were canceled or delayed, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. Ground crews worked around the clock, utilizing massive snow melters and a fleet of over 100 plows, but the sheer volume of snow proved difficult to manage. The accident, triggered by a sudden "whiteout" caused by intense lake-effect snow, has left multiple people injured and created a logistical nightmare on the busiest highway in North America. A catastrophic multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Queen Elizabeth Way near the Burlington Skyway, involving over 25 vehicles, including a hazardous materials tanker. The incident has paralyzed the "Golden Horseshoe" region, highlighting the extreme risks of winter transit in Southern Ontario. The situation escalated when a tanker carrying liquid nitrogen, unable to stop in time, veered into the median, striking a concrete barrier and causing a minor rupture in the outer casing. The involvement of the liquid nitrogen tanker triggered a "Level 2 Hazmat Alert."
