British Naval Beast: The Hawker Sea Fury
Published at : 17 Dec 2025
This episode concludes my Hawker’s Stormbirds series — from the Hurricane, Tornado, Typhoon, and Tempest — to the final and most refined evolution of Hawker’s piston-engine fighters: the Hawker Sea Fury.
Conceived as a lightweight Tempest replacement and nearly cancelled before it ever flew, the Sea Fury became one of the most capable propeller-driven fighters ever built. Sleek, brutally powerful, and fully navalised, it combined wartime lessons with post-war refinement — and arrived just in time to prove itself in Korea, where it even shot down jet-powered MiG-15s.
In this episode, we explore:
✈️ The Sea Fury’s unlikely development
⚙️ Griffon, Sabre, and Centaurus engine experiments
⚓ Carrier trials and naval refinements
💣 Ground-attack power and weapons
🔥 Combat service in Korea, the Bay of Pigs, and beyond
🌍 Global operators and surviving airframes
From Commonwealth carriers to Cuban dogfights, the Sea Fury carved out a remarkable career for an aircraft that almost didn’t exist — and became the last great piston-engined fighter of the Royal Navy.
