3//Atlas Update: NASA reveals crazy new Informations !!
Published at : 17 Dec 2025
The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has revealed its chemical secrets in spectacular fashion. In the past week, three major observatories have captured unprecedented views of this cosmic visitor as it approaches its closest point to Earth on December 19, 2025.
WHAT'S NEW:
- Gemini North Observatory captured 3I/ATLAS glowing in brilliant green - a dramatic color change showing diatomic carbon (C₂) in its coma
- ESA's XMM-Newton completed a 20-hour X-ray observation, revealing invisible molecules through solar wind interactions
- Researchers identified spiral jets suggesting "ice volcano" eruptions driven by sublimating CO₂
- ALMA detected methanol and hydrogen cyanide - potential building blocks for life
This is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed passing through our solar system, following 1I/'Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). Unlike its predecessors, 3I/ATLAS is giving us our most detailed look yet at material from another star system.
With just five days until closest approach (270 million km / 170 million miles), this may be our last chance to study this ancient traveler before it departs our solar system forever, heading back into the galactic night.
TIMELINE:
- July 1, 2025: Discovery by ATLAS telescope in Chile
- October 30, 2025: Perihelion (closest to Sun)
- December 19, 2025: Closest approach to Earth
- March 2026: Passes Jupiter
- ~8,000 years: Exits solar system completely

No danger to Earth. The comet poses no threat and will remain over 700 times farther away than the Moon at its closest point.
